Dear Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams,

We, the undersigned, represent a coalition of civil rights and community organizations dedicated to promoting equality and justice. Our coalition includes members from diverse faith-based and ethnic communities who are united in their concern over the divisive elements being introduced into the India Day Parade scheduled for August 18, 2024, in New York City.

India, with its rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and languages, exemplifies diversity and multiculturalism. This diversity is mirrored in New York City, a beacon of multicultural coexistence. Traditionally, the India Day Parade has been a celebration of this heritage, honoring the independence and varied cultural narratives of India. However, recent developments have marred this celebration, turning it into a platform for extremist ideologies.

The planned inclusion of a float by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad America (VHP-A), an organization noted by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom and other international watchdogs for its involvement in anti-minority activities, is deeply troubling. The VHP-A’s activities, including their direct association with violence against religious minorities in India, starkly contradict the values of inclusivity and mutual respect.

This year, the Federation of Indian Associations has permitted a float depicting the Ram Mandir, a structure built on the site of a demolished historic mosque, which has been a focal point of sectarian violence. This not only undermines the secular and inclusive spirit of the parade but also alienates and intimidates many in our diverse community who view this as a symbol of oppression.

Given the escalating levels of Islamophobia, now surpassing even the post-9/11 atmosphere in this very city, and the potential for such representations to foster division and hate, we respectfully urge your offices to demonstrate empathetic leadership that truly understands and addresses these concerns by implementing the following measures:

  • Review and amend the participation criteria for the India Day Parade, ensuring that no group with a history of promoting or engaging in violence is allowed to participate.

  • Encourage parade organizers to focus on themes that unite rather than divide, reflecting the pluralistic values that both India and New York uphold.

  • Ensure that city-supported events promote peace and understanding among all communities.

We believe that with your proactive support, the India Day Parade can truly reflect the inclusive and diverse spirit of both India and New York City. We look forward to your leadership, Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul, in making this event a symbol of unity and diversity.

Attached, please find the signatures of community leaders, organizations, and concerned citizens who stand with us in our call for a parade that celebrates true diversity and inclusivity.

Thank you for your attention to this matter of grave concern.

Sincerely,
